چکیده
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality globally.1 Survival the disease strongly associated with stage at diagnosis, 5-year survival rates reaching more than 90% when diagnosed I, compared just 10% IV.2 Fortunately, CRC amenable to screening, which enables detection CRCs early, treatable stages, prevention via removal premalignant polyps.3 Results from national survey in United States suggest that most (?80%) individuals undergoing screening participate regime colonoscopy every 10 years, whereas <10% undergo annual fecal occult blood tests (FOBTs) only ?1% flexible sigmoidoscopy 5 years FOBT 1–3 years.

Interference of plant peroxidases with guaiac-based fecal occult blood tests is avoidable.
Peroxidase-rich fruits and vegetables are reputed to interfere with guaiac-based fecal occult blood tests. We added horseradish peroxidase to fecal samples and tested them with Hemoccult, Hemoccult SENSA(R), and hydrated Hemoccult. Positivity rates with Hemoccult and Hemoccult SENSA decreased rapidly as the time between smearing (preparation) and development increased, whereas they remained hig...
متن کاملReduction in colorectal cancer mortality related to annual fecal occult blood screening--13 year follow-up of 46,000 subjects.
46,551 participants 50 to 80 years of age were recruited from among volunteers for the American Cancer Socie~, fraternal, veterans, and employee groups in Minnesota between 1975 and 1977. Excluded from the study were persons with history of colorectal cancer, familial polyposis, or chronic ulcerative colitis, and persons who were bedridden or otherwise disabled. After stratification by age, sex...
متن کاملRandom comparison of guaiac and immunochemical fecal occult blood tests for colorectal cancer in a screening population.
BACKGROUND & AIMS Despite poor performance, guaiac-based fecal occult blood tests (G-FOBT) are most frequently implemented for colorectal cancer screening. Immunochemical fecal occult blood tests (I-FOBT) are claimed to perform better, without randomized comparison in screening populations. Our aim was to randomly compare G-FOBT with I-FOBT in a screening population. METHODS We conducted a po...
متن کاملColorectal cancer screening comparing no screening, immunochemical and guaiac fecal occult blood tests: a cost-effectiveness analysis.
Comparability of cost-effectiveness of colorectal cancer (CRC) screening strategies is limited if heterogeneous study data are combined. We analyzed prospective empirical data from a randomized-controlled trial to compare cost-effectiveness of screening with either one round of immunochemical fecal occult blood testing (I-FOBT; OC-Sensor®), one round of guaiac FOBT (G-FOBT; Hemoccult-II®) or no...
متن کاملPostservice mortality in Vietnam veterans: 30-year follow-up.
BACKGROUND During the 1980s, the postservice mortality component of the Vietnam Experience Study was conducted to examine the health effects of the Vietnam experience. This study was limited by the relatively short follow-up and the young age of the veterans. Thus, a follow-up mortality investigation on this cohort was undertaken to further assess the impact of the Vietnam experience on chronic...
